Small Space Gardening

Gardening in very small spaces can be something of a challenge. Sometimes in fact, our spaces are so small that we think we can't actually do any gardening at all because we simply don't have the room. This isn't the case though. Gardens can be created in almost any sized space, because gardens can be created in almost any size you can think of.

One of the easiest ways to create gardens for small spaces is to use containers. You can use multiple containers for instance, which hang from the ceiling in front of your windows inside your home. Each container can have just one small plant in it, or it can have several plants which don't grow overly large even when they're fully mature. One of the best types of gardens to put into a hanging pot in front of your window in fact, are those which have plants that trail downwards from the pot instead of growing upwards in height. Various types of ivy plants for instance, give you color and texture that will spill over the sides of your hanging pots and look beautiful.

Another wonderful way to have a beautiful flower or herb garden when space is limited, is to put in a window box garden. These usually attach outside, just under your window, and they make a beautiful accent for both homes and apartments. Window gardens can be large or small, so they're sure to fit just about any sized window you have. You can put colorful annual flowers in these, or plant herbs for use in the kitchen. You can also plant perennials in a window box garden, but you'll need to be sure to choose plants and flowers which won't outgrow the window box too quickly or easily.

If you have patio, balcony, or porch space, you can also put window boxes on top of railings, or you can sit them on the ground instead, to make a wonderful accent for the entryway or sitting space outside your home.

If your porch or patio is large enough, or you even have a small yard space, another excellent way to have beautiful flowers growing and blooming is to put them into container gardens. Container gardens are easily moved, they fit into even the smallest of spaces, and they can come in larger shapes and sizes too if you have a little more room. When creating a container garden, you may want to consider putting a trellis or other natural support next to it, and planting some climbing vines too. Because when you don't have space to spread outwards, you can usually spread upwards instead.

And last but not least, don't forget to make use of windowsills and shelves in your home. There are plenty of minature plants and flowers which take up very little room even when fully grown, so their pots can fit easily on the window sill or on a shelf over your kitchen sink.
